We are delighted to announce that the team behind the first vertical solar as architectural cladding has been shortlisted for the prestigious Edie Net Zero Awards in the Green Building Project of the Year category. This recognition celebrates our work on the ground-breaking voco Zeal Exeter Science Park hotel for Zeal Hotels—a project setting a new benchmark for sustainable hospitality in the UK.
A UK First: Vertical Solar as Architectural Cladding
Believed to be the UK’s first hotel to feature vertical solar panels as cladding, the 142-bedroom voco Zeal Exeter Science Park is a true innovation in both design and sustainability. The building is almost entirely encased in solar technology, with a striking black glass façade of 2,619 vertical panels across three exterior walls, complemented by a rooftop solar array. This integrated approach enables the hotel to generate more electricity than it consumes annually, making it a showcase for net-zero design.
Designing for Maximum Impact
From the outset, Zeal Hotels’ ambition was clear: to create a hotel that would lead the way in carbon reduction and energy efficiency. As Nick Spicer, CEO of Your Eco, explains:
“The original plans included a rooftop solar system, but it became clear that rooftop solar alone wouldn’t produce enough energy to meet the hotel’s demands—a common challenge for buildings with limited roof space and high energy consumption. Our solution was to deliver a vertical solar installation that would not compromise on sustainability, adhering to Zeal’s clear and ambitious vision.”
Technical Excellence and Innovation
To address the unique challenges of vertical solar—such as increased risk of shading and fluctuating sunlight—we specified SolarEdge DC-optimised inverters and S-Series Power Optimisers. Unlike traditional string inverter systems, this technology isolates energy loss to individual panels, allowing each array to operate independently for maximum yield. The SolarEdge system also meets the hotel’s stringent safety requirements, with SafeDC™ technology automatically reducing voltage to safe levels, and Sense Connect arc-fault detection enabling early identification and mitigation of potential risks.
Project Highlights
320,000 kWh of clean, renewable energy generated annually
202 tonnes of CO₂ emissions eliminated each year
BREEAM Outstanding rating for sustainable building design
£200,000 annual savings projected for Zeal Hotels, with a return on investment in just 18 months
Advanced safety features: SafeDC™ and Sense Connect
A Model for the Future of Sustainable Hospitality
Tim Wheeldon, Founding Director of Zeal Hotels, comments:
“The decision to build our net-zero hotel reflects our commitment to combating climate change and reducing our carbon footprint. By harnessing renewable energy, implementing energy-efficient designs, and adopting innovative technology, we have created a space that provides both comfort and luxury while prioritising environmental responsibility.”
As demand for clean, renewable power grows, vertical solar installations are poised to become increasingly common. However, as Nick Spicer notes, “Achieving their full potential requires advanced technology—especially when panels are used as cladding, which brings added requirements like strict fire safety standards. SolarEdge’s technology ensures the solar façade is both efficient and safe, offering significant cost savings and peace of mind.”
Recognition and Looking Ahead
Being shortlisted for the Edie Net Zero Awards is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the Your Eco and Zeal Hotels teams, as well as our partners. We are proud to be recognised for pushing the boundaries of sustainable design, technology, and delivery, and remain committed to working towards an energy independent, low carbon future.
